What Is A High Pressure Water Jet And How Does It Work?

High pressure water jets have revolutionised the way blocked drains are cleared today. Fast, efficient and with minimum damage to the surrounding areas, high pressure water jets are the new buzz word in drain cleaning today. No more laborious and messy digging and cutting to unblock drains. The high pressure water cleaning system simply blasts the blockage through the drain!

How Does It Work?

Over time, seemingly harmless deposits of grease, detergents, hair and other thingamajigs that find their way down the drain will start to accumulate and obstruct the flow of water. As the water slows down, more materials get accumulated, blocking the drain completely and causing the water to back up. Another common cause of blocked drains is tree roots that exploit existing defects in pipes in their search for water and nutrients. Once inside the pipe, the continuous flow of water and nutrients helps them thrive and spread out even more, resulting in a dense mass that causes a drain blockage.

High pressure water jets operate at pressures that are in the range of 1000 psi to 5000 psi. At this high pressure, the flow of water acts as a sharp knife and cuts through whatever is blocking the drain, whether it is the build up of accumulated gunk from the household pipes or tree root intrusions. As it cuts through the blockage, the powerful force of the water dislodges the debris and sediment and carries it away down the drain.

These jets are capable of operating at pressures as high as 20,000 psi but at anything higher than 5000 psi, it is powerful enough to cut through the pipe. Unless absolutely necessary, very rarely will any Sydney plumber exceed 5000 psi for unblocking a drain.
